Glass technology and innovation go hand-in-hand and are continuously changing. New percolators and other similar components of water pipes are being invented and tweaked all the time. Scientific glass really has been built on the shoulders of giants. Take it from a Climax Expert, it can be overwhelming keeping up with modern glass tech. So in this post we are going to take a quick look at recyclers. We’ll focus on what they achieve as well as how they work alongside percolators and water to achieve those silky smooth rips.
So what is a recycler? A recycler is a series of waterways and chambers that help disperse thermal energy and add what’s known as diffusion (diffusion is the interaction between smoke and water). This in turn cools off the smoke and aids in diffusion by — you guessed it — recycling the water. In order for a recycler to work, a water pipe must have at least 2 different chambers of varying height from the base of the pipe to the mouthpiece. These chambers are interconnected by “tunnels” that carry smoke and water between them. The smoke travels first class all the way to the top. There are many different types of recyclers and some glass blowers have really taken them to the next level by even adding multiple ones in a single piece!
Let’s break down what is really happening inside: Keep in mind that water pipes work because of differences in the form of negative air pressure (a.k.a inhaling). Gotta love science, right? So starting out, the smoke is pulled into the bottom chamber from the bowl or nail. From the bottom chamber, the smoke diffuses and water helps deliver smoke bubbles onward. It is due to these pressure changes inside of the glass that the smoke and water are pulled into the top chamber, leading to the smoke rising to the mouthpiece and the water being pulled back to the bottom. The process of water carrying the smoke to the top repeats while this negative air pressure is occurring.
This may be a summary, but it helps illustrate the how and why recyclers work. Also think about adding percolators to the mix. More diffusion? I’m all in. Check out the pics above to get a better idea; seeing is believing! And make sure to stop by your neighborhood Climax Smoke Shop and check out all of the awesome recycler pieces that we have in stock. There’s a piece out there for everybody. Let us help you find it!

One of my personal favorite water pipes for many reasons (and not only because I own one myself); is our Climax glass straight tube triple honeycomb water pipe. The triple honeycomb water pipe at Climax Smoke Shop is a 16 inch straight tube with a sturdy base and if you have a cat (or any animal) like me, you will appreciate that this piece is not so easy to knock over. I personally like taller water pipes because in addition to percolators, the taller the water pipe, the cooler your smoke will be. This water pipe is a locally blown borosilicate glass piece that is exclusively distributed through all Climax Smoke Shop locations. Borosilicate glass is known for its fine quality and no thermal expansion; therefore, as your water pipe gets hot, the glass will not expand like other glass causing to break your bowl, nail, ash catcher or any other extension you may use on your water pipe.
In addition, honeycomb percolators are my favorite by far because of the silky smooth and intensely filtered hit that follows. Honeycomb disc percolators have more diffusion than any other percolator because there is typically 30 small holes in which the smoke passes through. The fact that this piece has three honeycomb discs guarantees your smoking experience to be that much more enjoyable and less stress on your lungs. For an affordable price at Climax Smoke Shop, you can’t go wrong with this triple honeycomb beauty.

An Adapter has two frosted glass joints on either end, and is usually straight (some are angled) they serve to adapt frosted glass joints to/from any size or sex.
A Drop Down is the same as an adapter, but the frosted joints on either end will have a straight or curved tube of glass between them. They are usually on an angle and will "drop" the height of the joint on your pipe.
They serve MANY different purposes!
First, they will distance the nail from your piece, which removes all of the heat from the joint on your pipe.
Second, they will serve as a "disposable" connector between your piece and nail. They are MUCH cheaper than even our least expensive water pipes/ rigs!
Third use would be as a location for any oils that haven't vaporized fully to build up. Instead of building up in the base of your pipe and getting nasty in the water, the drop down will catch most of it and keep it out of water!
They also will adapt to/from any size/sex joint. That way you can use 1 nail for every pipe/rig instead of getting a bunch of different nails!
There are a lot more reasons, for example, personally I don't like to have the torch near to my water pipe at all, even though everything in science says it's fine to be close to it, I prefer to have distance away from the pipe itself.
If you read on any major nail brand website, they will all say the same thing -
No matter what type of nail you're using, there is a lot of heat involved. If you are perfect and can heat the top of your nail to an exact temperature every time, then you MIGHT be okay not getting an adapter, but for all of the humans out there it is almost a necessity!
When you heat up the nail, there is heat that transfers down the nail. If you're not careful (and even sometimes when you are!) the heat transferred can cause the nail you're using to crack the glass joint on the end of your water pipe or rig.
Quartz, Ceramic, Titanium, or any combination in Male, Female, or Direct Inject can have the same issues.
- A female nail goes over a male joint. If the heat transfers it can expand the nail and actually slide down the frosted joint. As the nail cools, the material will condense, effectively shrinking (a tiny bit) and can snap off all or part of the joint, or even break the whole downstem area.
- A Male nail goes inside of a female joint. If the heat transfers it can expand the nail inside and actually crack the joint or destroy the whole downstem as well.
- A Direct Inject nail goes inside of a male joint. If the heat transfers (Takes a LOT more heat than the female or male) it is possible that the nail stem will expand inside the male joint and cause it to crack or break completely.
When using a glass adapter or drop down, it is still possible to heat up the nail too much and have it expand in or on the adapter/drop down. But if the worst-case does happen, the only thing you would have to do is get a new adapter or drop down, instead of buying a whole new rig/water pipe. Which cost less than a quarter of the price of even a "cheap" piece!!!
